Research and recommendations by the budtender are the two primary methods that cannabis patients use to help ascertain the best cannabis product to use. One driving difference is that the patient is determining what product is best suited to address their ailment or condition. The processes that support the traditional pharmacy will not support a cannabis dispensary. With medical cannabis, while there is a doctor’s recommendation to use cannabis, the specifics are left up to the patient. Recent legislation removes the registration with the Pharmacy Board, meaning that with just a doctor’s recommendation you will be able to purchase medical cannabis at a Virginia dispensary. To purchase from a Virginia medical dispensary, you must be a Virginia resident with a doctor’s recommendation for medical cannabis, and, until July 1st, you must be registered with the Board of Pharmacy as a medical cannabis patient. The only legal marketplace in Virginia to buy cannabis is through one of the licensed, medical cannabis dispensaries in the Commonwealth.
